Cape Verde is blessed with year-round sunshine – usually seven to ten hours a day – and low rainfall. Even in the so-called rainy season, from mid-August to mid-October, weeks can go by without any significant rain.

On Santiago the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees or rises above 30 degrees, with the tropical climate tempered by offshore winds.

The clear waters of the Atlantic are ideal for swimming and water sports, with sea temperatures ranging from 22-27 degrees. That's invariably warmer than the seas around the Canary Islands, Southern Portugal and the Mediterranean.

What's more, unlike the Caribbean, the location of the Cape Verde islands means that they are not subject to tropical storms or hurricanes.
